When Tesco announced its new-look Bowaters store would generate 88 jobs, 980 hopefuls applied - 11 applicants for every position.
1,000 jobseekers have flooded a Tesco store with CVs, as new research shows over nine people are seeking work for every vacancy in Medway.
The application-to-job ratio is even higher than a newly published National Housing Federation (NHF) document that says 9.4 people claiming Jobseekers' Allowance will go for each new post in the Towns.
Of those, 520 filled out forms available in the store and another 460 did so online.
Medway's ratio was the fourth highest in the south east, according to the statistics which showed that 6,173 claimants had applied for 657 jobs.
